Schaeffler team delivers strong performance at IAAF five-a-side tournament

Schaeffler demonstrated its team spirit and competitive edge at the inaugural IAAF five-a-side competition, held on Thursday 22 May at the Bet365 Stadium in Stoke. Schaeffler supported the IAAF by fielding a works team, Schaeffler United, in the tournament.

Managed by Tony Yates, Schaeffler’s digital marketing expert, and captained by Territory Manager Kieran Smith, the squad comprised staff from their Hereford and Birmingham offices, alongside members of the external sales team. Key players included Product Specialist Brad Adams, South West Territory Manager Mike Hansford, Sales Analysis and Pricing Manager Craig Rowlett, Warranty Specialist Jim Ridley, Technical & Projects Administrator Andy Prout, and Marketing Executive Kian Patel.

Schaeffler United joined 23 other teams from across the aftermarket in a professionally organised tournament. The competition began with six mini-leagues, with all teams progressing to a second stage. Schaeffler United advanced to the Champions League section after securing three consecutive wins in their initial matches. They went on to defeat Automechanika All Stars 3-1 in the quarter-final, followed by a 2-1 victory over Elring Das Originals in the semi-final.

In the final, Schaeffler United faced FUCHS United, a local Stoke-based oil company team, who had reached the final having scored 19 goals without conceding. Wearing their distinctive Schaeffler branded green kit, the team managed to break the FUCHS United defence, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The tournament winner was then decided by a penalty shoot-out. Schaeffler United ultimately finished as runners-up, a notable achievement in a competition featuring 24 teams.

Tony Yates, Schaeffler team manager, expressed pride in the team’s performance, highlighting their consistent team spirit throughout the tournament. He acknowledged that while they did not secure the winner’s trophy, achieving second place was a significant accomplishment. The runners-up cup will be displayed at Schaeffler’s HQ in Hereford. Yates also extended thanks to the IAAF for organising the event, stating that the team had a positive experience at the Bet365 Stadium.
