In over seventy years since Swarfega was first invented, there have been some unusual if not downright odd reported uses of the iconic green hand cleaning gel.
Delving into the Swarfega archives has turned up some of these weird and wonderful uses.
Strangest use
The strangest reported use was of a person that used Swarfega to clean the sweat glands of their guinea pig – you’ve got to wonder what they were thinking of when they came up with that idea.
Most painful
When starting out on your veterinary or nursing training, the last thing you think you’ll be using to clean wounds is a product normally found in the workshop.
According to the Nursing Times, Swarfega can help to degrease the area around a wound prior to dressing it.
The odd ball
It’s not hard to imagine Swarfega being used in sci-fi films and there are unsubstantiated rumours that it was used in Ridley Scott’s Alien, where monsters erupt from the bodies of their victims.
Most obvious
Tough on cleaning grease from mechanic’s hands, Swarfega is regularly cited as a method to clean pots and pans, grease on clothes and carpets, as well as for general domestic cleaning.
Least likely
According to one source, the Saturn V Apollo space rocket was moved from its build hanger to the Cape Canaveral launch site on a ‘V’ bed concrete track that was lubricated with Swarfega.
Swarfega doesn’t recommend any of the above uses of its original green gel and advises technicians that’s it’s best for cleaning oil and grease from hands.
