Swarfega is this week warning technicians about the dangers of UV radiation inside the garage workshop.
A Swarfega spokesperson said: “In the workshop, you may think that you’re protected from over-exposure, working indoors.
“There is, however a hidden threat, and it doesn’t come from the sun.
“If you spend your days working with cars, it’s possible that welding will be part of your daily routine.
“Perhaps a little-known fact is that the bright light generated from welding actually produces the full spectrum of UV radiation.
“Mechanics can sometimes experience eye pain, reddening and light sensitivity – known as ‘arc eye’- which is why heavy eye protection is used.
“However, the threat also exists for the skin.
UV radiation
“UV radiation in a welding arc can burn unprotected skin, just like the UV rays from sunlight.
“And just as with the sun’s rays, reflection from metal surfaces and concrete can be hazardous too.”
UV radiation can cause skin damage, including sun burn, blistering, and premature ageing, and in the long term, it can lead to skin cancer; one of the most common cancers in the world.
Just 20 minutes of unprotected exposure to UV radiation can have severe consequences to skin.
The spokesperson added: “Most in the workshop will reach for protective gloves and clothing which covers the arms and forearms.
“The heat however, particularly in the summer months, along with the need for intricate work in confined spaces can sometimes mean that these precautions are discarded in favour of short sleeves.
“This then leaves the skin exposed to UV rays.”
Sun cream is often the most practical option for exposed parts of the body, according to Swarfega.
Sun cream
Technicians are advised to choose a higher factor sun cream, ideally SPF30 or above, such as the TOUGH by Swarfega sun protection cream.
The spokesperson added: “Make sure it’s broad spectrum, as this means it will protect users from the wide range of UV rays.
“Make sure that sun cream is applied 15-20 mins before initial exposure to allow time to soak into the skin.
“Re-apply every 2 hours or more frequently if you’re sweating heavily.
“Choose sun cream that is water resistant such as Tough by Swarfega’s sun protection cream.”
