Sunday 8 March marked International Women’s Day, prompting worldwide celebrations for women’s achievements while calling out inequality.

From concerts and conferences to fun runs and festivals – International Women’s Day is celebrated globally.

Groups worldwide raise awareness, celebrate achievement and rally for change to help forge a more gender-equal world.

“The automotive industry is constantly moving forward”

Closer to home, global category manager for commercial vehicles at TMD Friction UK Ltd, Sue McKay said: “International Women’s Day is a day of recognition for industries, such as ours, that have continued to grow and evolve to achieve a diverse and inclusive working environment for all.

“Just like many other sectors, the automotive industry is constantly moving forward, and it’s important that we embrace every opportunity available to ensure we don’t get left behind.

“No one knows for certain what the future of the automotive sector looks like, but it’s definitely going to be an exciting venture, and one that we can’t do alone, and therefore we welcome the bright ideas and creativity that will naturally come from fresh young talent – and it goes without saying that this includes both males and females.”

It’s exciting to see a growing shift in perception

Wendy Williamson, chief executive of the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF), said: “There’s no denying that the automotive aftermarket has always been traditionally male dominated.

“However, it’s exciting to see a growing shift in perception, which is thanks to a stronger focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the classroom, and an increase in inclusive industry initiatives throughout the supply chain.

“We’re seeing more female leaders than ever before helping to shape the sector at every level, from top-quality manufacturers, right through to a rise in female technicians out in the field.

“On International Women’s Day, we should honour the strong females in business who are actively breaking down barriers and driving change, as well as celebrating the progress that has been made from forward-thinking, determined professionals who are constantly striving for equality across the board.”
