The Fire Industry Association (FIA), the UK’s leading trade association for the fire protection sector, has released new guidance aimed at improving the testing procedures for lead-acid batteries used in fire detection and alarm system power supplies.
This detailed guidance note addresses the critical aspect of secondary (backup) power supply reliability in the event of a mains power failure. The document is intended for system designers, installers, and maintainers, providing an evaluation of commonly used testing methods and offering practical recommendations based on current industry capabilities and relevant standards.
In response to increasing scrutiny of life safety systems and their maintenance, the FIA’s latest document clarifies how to accurately assess the capacity of standby batteries without negatively impacting system performance or safety during the testing process.
Key insights from the guidance include the recommendation of momentary or pulse load testing as the most suitable field method currently available, balancing accuracy, safety, and test duration. The document notes that while accurate, common test methods such as full-load and reduced-load testing are often impractical for on-site use due to safety concerns, time limitations, and the necessity for post-test battery recharging. The FIA also highlights that voltage readings and electrolyte analysis alone are insufficient indicators of overall battery health.
The guidance emphasises that inadequate or inconsistent testing can lead to both false positives and false negatives, carrying significant safety and financial implications. It also stresses that any battery test method should be supported by calibrated equipment and consistent application across the fire protection industry.
The document aligns with the requirements outlined in BS 5839-1:2013 and other associated standards, reinforcing the importance of regular and appropriate battery testing as part of routine system maintenance.
