A mechanic has criticised parents who park on double yellow lines outside his place of work at Volsaa Engineering in Derby.

Ross Knight says inconsiderate parking by parents picking up their children leads to gridlock and “chaos” for local businesses and residents between 3pm and 4pm.

He says that he and his colleagues cannot get cars in and out of the workshop during these times due to the heavy traffic.

Heavy traffic

Despite complaining to the council, Ross says nothing has been done to rectify the problem.

He said: “It’s been getting worse and worse, we’ve been trying the council for a while now and nothing has been done.”

A spokesperson for Derby City Council said: “This location is patrolled on a rotational basis at school arrival and dispersal times as our enforcement patrols are in great demand at these times of the day.

“As a result, we ensure each location receives a proportionate response based on the location-specific issues.

“When patrols are present driver behaviour improves but unfortunately when our patrols are not present some drivers appear to slip back to old habits.

“However, the newly introduced Public Protection Officers will help to complement the work carried out by the Civil Enforcement patrols and, as a result, this will increase the enforcement capability the council have at these key times of the day.”

Commuter parking

Alsion Brannick, principal at Landau Forte College, said: “We have asked our parents and carers before to respect the parking restrictions on Fox Street and suggested alternatives such as car shares or meeting children on nearby streets.

“I am also aware that some commuters are using the roads in this area for parking, which adds to the congestion and reduces spaces for those picking up children.”
