Customers still owed £160k after garage closure

Former customers of a garage in Warrington which closed down in spring 2022 fear they may not get their money back.

Crest Motorsports Northwest Ltd – not be confused with Crest Motorsport Ltd of Aylesbury – went bankrupt last year, with customers owed in the region of £160,000.

The company’s director left a note at the garage saying: “Crest Motorsport North West Limited has ceased trading.

“Every avenue to allow the business to continue trading has been explored, inevitably these have been intangible. The business cannot continue with the volume of debt and unfulfilled customers associated; I sincerely apologise to all those affected by this inevitable outcome.”

”During the time trading, the intention was always to complete all booked work. I am deeply aggrieved by this outcome and have had no personal gain from this business venture, instead facing personal bankruptcy.

”To all those affected and involved, my deepest apologies.”

An investigation by the Warrington Guardian revealed that Thomas Seddon filed for personal bankruptcy.

Speaking in August 2023, one customer said: “People did try going to a small claims court but I don’t think anything really came from it.

“The general understanding is that nothing could be done as it was a limited company that has now ceased trading – essentially, because the business doesn’t exist anymore there is nobody to sue/reclaim money from.

“I believe the garage owed thousands and had next to no assets when the bailiffs arrived. My car is currently still just sat in a garage with no engine or anything.”

Another customer said there were 15 to 20 engines worth between £6,000 and £7,000 in the garage waiting to be put into cars, while another said they had lost £10,000.

The firm’s bankruptcy has affected Crest Motorsport Ltd in Buckinghamshire. Ruppert Potter, a director at the unrelated company, told the Warrington Guardian: “Crest Motorsport Northwest Ltd formed several years after us and started using our strapline as well as our name.

“We frequently received customer service calls relating to their poor service and these intensified after the collapse. Clearly, we have not been as badly affected as their customers who have lost money or vehicles.

“But our reputation has taken a hit as a result of the way they’ve treated their customers and we have had many distressing calls from people who have been badly affected.”
