Comments argued that the dog looked realistic.

An anonymous Facebook post details a driver’s outrage upon discovering that their car window had been smashed in an apparent attempt to rescue a toy dog.

Added to the Spotted Weston-super-Mare Facebook group, the post reads: “I returned to my car after leaving it for 20 minutes to do some shopping to find someone has smashed the back window in as they thought my daughter’s plush toy dog was a real dog trapped in the heat.

“How can you be this stupid?

“Shame on you.”

However, as the incident happened on one of the hottest days of the year so far, many of comments left on the post actually congratulated the window-smasher.

One commenter said: “I would have done the same thing – that does look quite life-like.”

Another added: “Well done to the person who did it thinking it was a real dog, be thankful people care.”

The RSPCA advises that while it is not illegal to leave a pet unattended in a vehicle, if the animal becomes ill or dies as a result the owner could be charged with animal cruelty.
