DVSA reassures test stations about new MOT card

The DVSA has responded to concerns about the new MOT security card ahead of its roll out in October

DVSA reassures test stations about new MOT card
The cards and any replacements will be free, although the DVSA has told GW Views that it reserves the right to charge in the future.

A new MOT testing service security card which works similar to an online banking security card has raised questions from MOT test stations across the country.

In an exclusive interview for GW Views – GW’s quarterly trade magazine – the agency responded to concerns put forward by GW readers.

The full interview will be available to read in the next issue of GW Views, out next week.

The agency has since updated it’s blog with an explanation to why it’s introducing the new card.

‘Safer than the current system’

The DVSA said: “Although the current PIN system is secure, it was always only meant to be a temporary measure before introducing the MOT security cards.

“The new MOT security card displays a unique number each time it’s used.

“Since you don’t need to remember this, the security card is something that you have, rather than something you need to remember.”

Early trials have been completed with VTS councils and at VTSs in Falkirk, Manchester, Widnes, Nottingham, London and Bristol.

Testers have raised concerns about the durability of the new cards but the DVSA say they will be waterproof and designed to “take general wear and tear”.

It added: “To prove how durable the new cards are, we dropped, bent and even stamped on a card in front of testers and it continued to work.”

The next stage of testing, which will take place in September, will involve testers in over 300 VTSs trialling the card in a live testing environment.

Please share your comments below and look out for an exclusive interview in GW Views next week where we put your MOT questions to the DVSA.

  3. I am on the side of security cards, more secure, safer, faster and a lot easier to use. Perasonally I can’t wait for the roll out.

  5. I would like to see the introduction of the new security card. I think It is a good/safer way to test vehicles as a tester. (Similar to the previous VTS cards) thanks.

  7. Waste of time like dvsa say system is secure already.
Now means i will have to carry a card all day again.

Would also be easier for someone to get hold of the card and use it. Than have log in info stored in your head.

  9. Personally i think it’s a waste of time. I’ve had my card 4/5 days now and I’ve already left it by my computer a few times now, never done that with my head that has my pin number in. I dont want to sound negative (only having my card a few days now) but to me this is security going backwards. I think it’s much more secure to enter a pin (from memory) before any printing is carried out.
