The longest-serving employee of Marcos Heritage has retired after 55 years with the marque. Rory MacMath’s career started in 1968 as an engineer at the Marcos Cars’ Greenland Mills factory in Bradford-on-Avon, building five to six wooden chassis cars a week.

Marcos moved to new premises in Westbury in 1971, and Rory was involved in developing a new metal chassis and running the service department. Marcos’ customers included Rod Stewart, actor Sam Wanamaker and Blue Peter’s John Noakes.

The cost of the new premises, the development of the Mantis M70, the introduction of purchase tax and the collapse of the American market led to the firm’s collapse, with MacMath and co-founder Jem Marsh the last of the employees to leave.

Rory went on to work with the new owners of the Rob Walker Group, where he continued to run the service department for Marcos customers. Having left the company, he went back to work with Jem Marsh on a new venture, selling and maintaining Marcos cars.

In November 1997, after other chapters in his career, Rory purchased Marcos Heritage Spares. Following the bankruptcy of Marcos Engineering in 2000, Marcos Heritage secured the future of the company by buying the company’s assets, including moulds, tooling and jigs.

Two years ago, Marcos Heritage was purchased by Page Automotive, under the direction of CEO Howard Nash, who told the Wiltshire Times: “We would like to offer a huge thank you Rory for his loyal years of service.

”He will be missed by the Marcos community, customers, owners, and suppliers alike and we wish him well in his retirement.”

Nick Kleiff will take over the reigns, while Rory’s children, Emily and James MacMath, will continue to work at the company. Emily said: “I have been working with dad and Marcos since 1997, and James started in the early 2000s, so it was and still is a family concern.”
