The Green Garage, a family-run garage in Walmer, Deal, has closed its doors after nearly 100 years of operation. The lease for the property has expired, and the landowner plans to sell the site.
Archie Shorter, the 83-year-old owner of The Green Garage, expressed his sadness over the closure. The garage had been in operation since the early 1980s, carrying out over 20,000 MOT tests and specialising in classic car maintenance.
Mr. Shorter, who took over the business with his partner Brian Olby in the 1980s, said, “It has been my life for 44 years.” His son, Wayne, also worked as a mechanic at the garage.
The Green Garage was one of the few remaining independent garages in the area. With the closure, there are now only three or four independent garages in Walmer and Deal.
The garage was originally launched in 1928 by Ernest Kennett as a repairs garage, haulage contractor, and taxi service.
