Trusted manager defrauded classic car restoration business during owner's illness

Former Porsche garage employee ordered to repay stolen £60k

A former manager at a Dorset-based Porsche restoration company has been ordered to repay tens of thousands of pounds that he stole while the business owner was undergoing cancer treatment.

Scott McCurdy, 56, abused his position as operations manager at Canford Classics to steal car parts over a six-year period. He ordered parts through the company and then sold them online for personal gain.

The total loss to the business is estimated to be around £100,000, with McCurdy profiting close to £68,000 by selling the stolen parts at retail prices. The company owner, Dr. Alan Drayson, considered McCurdy a close friend and colleague, making the betrayal even more difficult.

McCurdy’s fraudulent activity came to light after he left the company in 2021. A routine stock check revealed discrepancies and missing invoices. Dr. Drayson expressed deep hurt and disappointment, particularly as the thefts intensified during his hospitalisation for cancer treatment.

McCurdy admitted his guilt and has been ordered to repay £61,070.62 within three months to avoid a prison sentence.

In court, Dr. Drayson highlighted the impact of the theft, stating that it left the business “in a very vulnerable position.” He felt a deep sense of betrayal not only for the financial loss but also for the time McCurdy spent orchestrating the scheme while entrusted with a key role.

McCurdy’s defense lawyer argued that this behavior was out of character and that the stolen funds were not used for an extravagant lifestyle.

Despite avoiding immediate jail time, McCurdy received a two-year suspended prison sentence and must complete 250 hours of unpaid work.
