Garages urged ‘carefully consider’ management software

Cloud-based programmes fail to provide the same service as locally installed software, says Garage Data Systems

Garages urged ‘carefully consider’ management software
Garage Data Systems gives workshops reasons to turn down a cloud management system.

With ten year’s of development behind Garage Data Systems’ (GDS) comprehensive workshop management system, the company is urging independent garages to consider the benefits of a locally installed programme over a cloud-based alternative.

A GDS spokesperson said: “We are occasionally asked if we are intending to develop an internet/cloud system but our response is no.

“We added VRM lookup, SMS texting, email and multi -branch links which work over the Internet.

“Our system has always been installed locally on the customers premises, and for that reason, we believe it works as well as it can all the time, and integrates well with other products and modules, and onsite computer hardware.

“Our ‘LogMeIn Rescue’ system allows us to connect up to a customer’s PC when we are asked for assistance with training issues, or other software or hardware issues.”

GDS on reasons to turn down a cloud management system

1. “Creating good cloud based products means software companies going back to the design drawing board, so most web/cloud based products bare no resemblance to the desktop based versions.
2. “Developers who have put ten years of work into a Windows-based product cannot get the same functionality into a cloud-based product on day one, so a lot of features will likely be stripped out of their cloud based product.
3. “Cloud-based products are usually almost always subscription based, with no choice of a single one off payment.
4. “Cloud-based products mean your databases are under the control of the supplier, if you cannot access your data files, you may struggle to migrate your data to a new supplier in the future.
5. “Cloud-based products will never work as fast, or integrate as well, as a system that is hosted locally.
6. “By using a product that is hosted elsewhere and accessed via the internet, you are adding many more potential points of failure to your system, such as broadband issues for you, broadband issues at the supplier end, hardware issues at the supplier end, service disruption at the supplier end.”

GDS say new garages using its system are often pressurised by their existing supplier to upgrade to a cloud-based product.

The spokesperson added: “Cloud-based products have certainly changed the world when it comes to finding or sharing news and information, or collaborating with others.

“At GDS, we don’t believe the cloud is the best place for your workshop management system to be hosted.

“If you are being forced to migrate to the cloud then we believe that these points are well worth considering.”
