It’s an obvious analogy but nevertheless it rings true; you wouldn’t spend your hard earned cash on a shiny new car without turning on the ignition to check it’s actually got an engine under the bonnet would you?

So why do so many businesses invest in shiny new websites that look great but have nothing under their sleek exterior? By this, I mean the hidden techy stuff that drives the shiny design straight to where you need it to be – your customers’ computer and mobile phone screens.

A website that isn’t built with the right backend know-how might as well just be a brochure in your toolbox that nobody can see. The problem is, with so many routes available to get to finished website, just where do you start? Build it yourself? Ask someone you know? Sign up to an aggregator site provider? Bite the bullet and get a local website company to design one? All of these have one thing in common – the whole exercise risks being a huge waste of time and money.

People don’t buy a performance car just because it looks good, they want it to perform and unless you invest in a website with the same intention, you might as well not bother. When people search for something online, Google uses a whole host of things to decide whether to put your website at the top of the list. If your site isn’t built by someone who understands exactly what they are – and they change constantly – nobody is ever going to find you online. The good news is, just like there’s good mechanics and bad mechanics, it’s the same for web companies. And if you can find one that specialises in the independent garage sector, all the better.

Like any investment for your garage, a website should not only just pay for itself over time; it should work smart to bring in extra business too. It can only do this if it knows how to jostle to the front of the search engine queue and this is the crucial difference between a website that’s worth its weight in gold and one that’s no more than a drain on your time and bottom line.

So, where to start?

A specialist web company that understands the independent garage sector as well as it understands what makes Google tick, is probably one of the savviest investments you’ll make. And it’s crucial that the company you’ve chosen then helps you keep your eye on that investment by checking the analytics and working with you to maintain the site’s performance. Just like a car service – but even quicker.

You work hard to make your customers’ cars run effectively, make sure you demand the same of your website too.
