The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. This decision, announced by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, reverses the previous government’s decision to delay the ban until 2035.

The government has launched a consultation to gather feedback from the public and industry stakeholders on the implementation of this policy. This move aims to provide clarity for manufacturers, boost investor confidence in charging infrastructure, and encourage consumer uptake of electric vehicles (EVs).

While the 2030 deadline has been reinstated, concerns remain within the automotive industry. Manufacturers have called for continued government support, including incentives to encourage consumer adoption of EVs.

The industry has experienced uncertainty due to previous changes to the ban timeline. Manufacturers, such as Ford, have emphasised the need for consistent government policies to support long-term investment and planning.

The consultation period will end on February 18th, 2025, allowing stakeholders to submit their views to the Department for Transport.

  1. I have been running a garage since 1991 and frankly seen many mistakes and bad decisions by the powers that be
during all of this i am still paying tax ni vat into the system to pay people in power to make mistakes
now in 2025 i find myself unable to recruit staff, paying more than ever ,unable to buy decent parts in a sensible timescale, dealing with the public that think everything is next day including the repair and watching the farmers rising up to challange the goverment i feel it is about time we as a trade need to stand up and be counted am i right ??

    • You are perfectly right new staff are impossible to recruit built in obsolescence of current cars are destroying them far to early. The ridiculous Mot fee of £54.85 is only helping to kill us all off

  2. Yes you are this country hasn’t got the capability or the capacity to run an all electric powered vehicle structure.
Also what they are not telling us is that there is more waste now since electric cars than there was before and that comes from someone who works for the environmental agency
So tell me how is that going greener?
