Frustrated drivers have been competing to uncover the worst areas for parking in Britain, reports Metro.

The competition, launched by car dealership Peter Vardy, showcased the extent drivers are willing to stretch their imaginations to when in a rush to park.

Highlights of the submissions included drivers parking in a supermarket trolley shed and a tractor wedged over two spaces in a council car park in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

A mobility scooter parked perfectly within the edges of a small, blue disabled bay in Lanarkshire, Scotland managed to scoop second place, while the grand prize of £100 in vouchers went to a Mini driver who parked up on a roundabout in Essex.

Popular UK issue

Hamish Livingston, of Peter Vardy, commented: “A lot of places in the UK are quite historic, so it’s feasible that a lot of the city centres have limited space as often they’ve been designed back when there weren’t many (or any) cars on the road.

“Locations that have introduced means to reduce congestion have also had the effect of freeing up some car park spaces, but people are still claiming they need to create their own spaces due to lack of availability.

“Our competition gained some interesting entries, proof that it is an issue many of us face in daily driving life.”

Hard to park

Peter Vardy also conducted a poll of 500 drivers, which showed a quarter of UK motorists admit to “creative parking” in lieu of finding a spot.

It was found that Nottingham is the hardest city for parking, followed by Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff and Bristol.

Belfast, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Glasgow were the easiest cities for parking.
