The owners of Jaguar Land Rover will invest £4bn in a new electric car battery factory near Bridgwater, Somerset.

Tata will receive government subsidies thought to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

The plant, which is due to open in 2026, will initially produce batteries for Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, but the plan is to supply other car manufacturers.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told the BBC: “Tata is an international business and will consider a number of factors when deciding where to invest. Last autumn the chancellor cut taxes specifically so that we could encourage investments like this.

”We’re making lots of changes and it’s this whole package that’s attractive, like investment in skills and apprenticeships, infrastructure in road, rail and broadband.

“It’s also the approach we’re taking to regulation after leaving the EU.”

Mike Hawes, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) chief executive, added: “With the global industry transitioning at pace to electrification, producing batteries in the UK is essential if we are to anchor wider vehicle production here for the long term.”

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, so is seen as a major boost for both local employment and the UK car industry.
