Long-standing Wanstead garage closes after nearly 50 years

Stevens Motors, a family-run car garage in Wanstead, London, has closed down after almost 50 years of operation. Brad Stevens, who joined the business in 1976, has retired after 48 years at the Wanstead site.

Mr Stevens described his retirement as “strange” after such a long and continuous period. Despite challenges like the ULEZ and the pandemic, he enjoyed his work. He explained that personal expenses incurred during these times had been repaid, allowing him to retire, according to the Ilford Recorder.

His daughter, Leigh, marked the closure as “the end of an era,” noting that Stevens Motors was the last of four family-run garages that were present in Wanstead when her father joined in 1976. The others had closed over time, with Browns being the most recent in 2015.

Stevens Motors was originally established in 1949 by Mr Stevens’ father, John Stevens, and moved to Wanstead in 1968. Mr Stevens joined in 1976 and took over the business in 2006. He acknowledged the difficulty in keeping up with modern automotive technology, particularly electric vehicles, as a factor in his retirement.

While Stevens Motors has closed, Mr Stevens will continue to work part-time at Dipsticks Garage in South Woodford to ensure his former customers are still looked after with the same standards of service.

This closure follows a similar situation where Mount Street Garage in Somerset was recently forced to close due to a parking dispute.
