A man dialled 999 for help after he got stuck in melting tarmac during the UK’s heatwave this week.

Service staff in the North East of England reportedly dug around the man’s leg with a hammer and chisel before they were able to free him.

A Tyne and Wear fire service spokesman said the UK’s ongoing heatwave was to blame.

They said: “During the good weather please be mindful things like this can happen – be more aware when you’re walking around.”

The hot weather is set to continue, with reporters expecting the heatwave to continue well into next week at temperatures around 30C.
