MANN+HUMMEL's integrated air guidance system protects fuel cells from harmful gases, particles and water.

At the IAA 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show MANN+HUMMEL will present products and solutions the company is developing to pursue some of its ambitious targets.

Integrated fine dust particle filter

MANN+HUMMEL fine dust filters retain fine dust from the ambient air including tire and road abrasion particles as well as brake dust and in this way in particular also retain particles from other vehicles.

The flexible filter element from MANN+HUMMEL is integrated between cooler and bumper.

In cooperation with HBPO the front-end module expert, MANN+HUMMEL has now developed an integrated fine dust particle filter which can be fitted to previously unused installation space in the front-end module.

The flexible filter element from MANN+HUMMEL is integrated between cooler and bumper. This allows every new vehicle to improve its fine dust emission balance.

Brake dust particle filters

MANN+HUMMEL´s passive brake dust particle is fitted directly to the brake caliper and retains the particle emissions directly at the brake.

A large part of fine dust associated with road traffic is generated by the brakes.

Every time vehicles brake there is wear on the brake disc and pads and this creates fine dust.

The passive brake dust particle filter from MANN+HUMMEL is fitted directly on the brake caliper and retains particle emissions directly at the brake.

It fits into many varied types of installation space and can be adapted to different brake sizes and concepts.

FreciousSmart cabin filter system

The FreciousSmart cabin air filter system has been specially adapted to the compact size of best-selling EV model Renault Zoe.

One of the biggest challenges for electric mobility is to extend the driving range of the vehicle.

Batteries lose energy through heating, cooling and the cleaning of air which enters the vehicle and the air inside the vehicle.

The increase in air pollution worldwide, however, makes adequate filtration essential in order to protect vehicle occupants against air pollution and fine dust.

Manufacturers are therefore looking for concepts which require a low amount of energy and at the same time are able to provide vehicle occupants with clean air.

This is made easier thanks to the FreciousSmart cabin filter system. The intelligent system mainly operates the air conditioning system in recirculation mode.

As a result, the energy consumption is reduced and the service life of the filter elements is extended.

E-mobility

The most valuable component of electric vehicles is without doubt the electric battery.

In particular, lithium-ion cells with a high storage capacity can only be operated within a tight temperature range.

Increased temperatures, however, lead to a premature loss of performance, considerable overheating and even the destruction of the battery cell.

The right heating and cooling strategy during charging and during operation is therefore decisive for the system durability.

Furthermore, electric motors and power electronics have to be cooled.

In addition to protection against overheating, for example, a significant pressure difference between the ambient pressure and pressure inside the battery system has to be avoided.

Apart from that, condensate from the air humidity must not be allowed to form in the battery system as this can lead to short‑circuits.

MANN+HUMMEL offers numerous filtration solutions here including cooling air particle filters, air dryer cartridges and oil dryer cartridges which are all designed to reliably protect the battery system.

Emissions legislation is becoming stricter and accordingly also the search for alternative drives.

An important concept here is the fuel cell as a supplier of energy for the electric drive.

The core components of fuel cell stacks are highly sensitive to particles, harmful gases and water present in the intake air.

In order to ensure trouble-free operation and extend the lifetime of the system, the filtration of particles and the adsorption of harmful gases is therefore equally important as efficient water separation.

With the newly developed air guidance system for the cathode path, MANN+HUMMEL can now offer customers a holistic approach to protection against particles, harmful gases and unwanted flow noises.
