Millions of motorists in Britain are driving without a valid MOT, according to new research from Direct Line for Business.

One in six drivers have accidentally driven their vehicle without a valid MOT for a week at least once in the past five years.

One in 12 admitted to have accidentally driven without a valid MOT for over six months.

The research shows that of those who accidentally drove without a valid MOT for a week, nearly half only drove once.

However, eight per cent drove five or more times.

It also found that men were more than likely to have driven without a valid MOT than women and drivers aged between 18 and 34 to be much more likely to do so than any other age group.

London ranked the most likely region for motorists to drive without a valid MOT for a week.

Matt Boatwright, head of Direct Line for Business, said: “Keeping a vehicle road worthy is a legal requirement and essential from a safety perspective for both the person driving and others on the road.

“We understand that having to turn down work because your van is in the garage can be frustrating, however not having a valid MOT could result in a hefty fine and in some cases lead to you losing your licence.”

The government’s official MOT history service allows motorists to check a vehicle’s MOT history and if there are outstanding safety recalls.

Not only do a number of cars we test have expired MOT’s I am staggered at the casual reaction we get from some (not all) of the owners when we tell them. Plus, often the car will then fail the test, and when we suggest that we keep the car so that we can carry out the repairs ASAP we are often met with a response like “I can’t do without the car for at least two weeks, I have to run the kids to school / We’re going on holiday in it next week / I’m going to see my mate in London at the weekend”, and so on. Although we explain the severity of the situation a lot of drivers just do not understand the risks involved never mind the possibility of fines & license endorsements. What can be done to educate the motoring public?
