Boston’s new wireless DC-7500 connected decelerometer.

The DVSA is continuing its rollout of connected MOT equipment with a rule extension to cover decelerometers from 1 February 2020.

Businesses buying a new or replacement decelerometer for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 test lanes after this date will need to make sure it’s a model that can connect to the MOT testing service.

The rule also applies to newly opening and reopening MOT centres and test stations which have made a change of ownership.

The news follows the introduction of connected roller brake testers on 1 October 2019.

Software updates may be available for existing digital decelerometers which will allow them to connect to the MOT testing service.

MOT centres are advised to email the DVSA to gain a software code which will allow compatible equipment to connect to the MOT testing service.

The rule is expected to be extended further later this year to cover connected versions of emission gas analysers, diesel smoke meters and headlamp beam testers.

Half of Garage Wire readers are against a move to connected MOT equipment, according to a recent poll, with cost being the overwhelming concern.

The poll also found that 33 per cent support the updates in a bid to reduce fraudulent activities.

The DVSA has not indicated when it will become mandatory for existing test stations to install connected equipment but it’s expected that such changes would be put the trade for consultation.

Still totally disgusted with these new rules. I was hoping to put my business on the market and retire soon (I will be 70 this year) but now I don’t see how I can simply because any new owner (and no doubt me in due course!) will need to invest many thousands of pounds into the business to keep testing. And don’t forget how many years it is since the permitted fee went up so no possibility of even hoping to cover the additional expenditure. But do we think the DVDSA care?

This is extremely harsh on those of us who carry out proper MOT tests that we have to pay the price for frauds and crooks, maybe the dvsa should focus on hiring some staff to look into fraudulent matters quicker. All that will happen is garages won’t be able to afford the new testing equipment and people will slowly stop testing creating a shortage much like the HGV tester shortage. I’m also looking to become a shareholder in our business but will now have to invest in new equipment . Why can’t there be a retro fit type system?
