The Isle of Man’s infrastructure minister, Michelle Haywood, has stated that there are no plans to introduce MOT tests for Manx-registered vehicles. In a written answer to a Tynwald question from Jason Moorhouse MHK, Ms Haywood explained that implementing such a system would incur “significant cost” for both the public and the government.

Currently, privately-owned vehicles registered on the Isle of Man that are over three years old are not required to undergo an annual roadworthiness test, unlike the UK’s MOT system. However, vehicles older than three years being imported to the island are subject to a one-off examination at the vehicle test centre.

Ms Haywood noted that the evidence suggesting periodic vehicle testing would lead to improved safety is “limited.” She further elaborated on the financial implications, stating that the introduction of MOT testing would directly cost the public through test fees at garages and would also require government expenditure for regulation and administration.

The minister affirmed that the current government policy is not to introduce mandatory periodic vehicle testing on the island. While MOT tests are not under consideration, the Isle of Man Constabulary conducts various random vehicle checks throughout the year. Ms Haywood also pointed out that mandatory testing is already in place for higher-risk vehicles, including heavy goods vehicles, taxis, and buses.
