New lifts ordered for Northern Ireland’s MOT centres

External review suggests inadequate inspection regime and metal fatigue led cracking

New lifts ordered for Northern Ireland’s MOT centres

Fifty two new lifts have been purchased for Northern Ireland’s MOT centres, the infrastructure minister has announced.

It comes after cracks discovered in 52 out of 55 lifts led to thousands of tests being cancelled.

Centres are currently operating at around half the normal capacity.

The cost of buying the new lifts is £1.8m and will be paid out of Driver & Vehicle Agency funds.

The lifts will be supplied by the same company as before, MAHA.

The minister, Nichola Mallon, said the quickest way to install the new lifts was to use the existing contract.

An external review has suggested an inadequate inspection regime and metal fatigue led to the situation.

Ms Mallon said: “This situation has shown to me that we need to improve our MOT systems and our centres, and I am considering a range of options and will be taking action over the coming months.”

New independent inspections will be put in place once the new equipment is installed to ensure the problem isn’t repeated.

It is hoped the new lifts will start to be phased in around mid-April, with the process completed by mid-July.

I must have misunderstood the situation.
At first glance it would appear that the company whose maintenance engineers tried to sweep the problem under the carpet get rewarded with a sale not a prosecution.
