A motorhome dealer who spent two years duping people out of nearly £350,000 has been ordered to pay back just £2,000.
Christine Galloway, of St Andrews Motorhomes in Scotland, is serving a 12-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to scamming customers in an effort to support her failing business. Galloway acted as a broker for unsuspecting customers, conning them into parting with their motorhomes for her to sell on.
The Daily Record reported how one couple, Robert and Carol Moore, handed over their Peugeot Boxer and were relying on the sale to fund a trip to Canada. Robert said: “We ended up having to put more money on credit cards and cut the holiday short.
“We’ve not seen a penny and someone else is driving about with our van.” Carol added: “We wanted our day in court with her to tell her exactly what she’s done to these people. We just see her as a coward. She waited until the very last minute to make a plea.
“This was our pension pot. We could have sat it in the bank but we thought we would get enjoyment out of it instead. She took that away from us.”
Appearing in court , Galloway admitted to fraudulently obtaining £347,450 from a dozen customers between 2016 and 2018.
Kelly Duling KC, defending, told Dundee Sheriff Court: “The results have been devastating. She was, in a way, robbing Peter to pay Paul. She would like to issue the deepest apologies. She will be haunted by it until the day she dies.”
