A severe pothole on the westbound carriageway of the A35, near Shipton Gorge outside Bridport, has caused damage to at least 60 vehicles within four days.
Motorists have reported significant damage to their tyres and wheels after hitting the pothole, leading to substantial repair costs. Andrew Hall, a campsite owner, incurred a £600 bill for a replacement tyre and wheel refurbishment after his Range Rover was damaged.
Sebastian Klinger, depot manager of ETB Autocentres in Bridport, reported an unprecedented number of vehicles requiring repairs. On the first day of the week, the garage saw 20 cars with pothole-related damage, with repair costs ranging from £60 to £500. By Wednesday, the total number of affected vehicles had reached 60.
Klinger stated that he had “never seen anything like it” in his 20 years in the industry. He noted that the pothole, particularly on the left side of the carriageway, was difficult to avoid, especially in wet conditions.
Motorists reported hitting the pothole at night, resulting in “almighty sounds” and “shredded” tyres. One driver expressed concern that their wheel had been severely damaged.
The A35 is maintained by National Highways. The organisation has been approached for comment regarding the pothole and its repair.
