A rare and highly valuable Ferrari F40 was involved in a serious accident on Thursday afternoon in Markyate, Hertfordshire. The incident occurred while the vehicle was undergoing service at an undisclosed location – although the accident happened near to where Bell Sport & Classic are based.
The vehicle collided with a lamppost, resulting in significant damage. Photographs from the scene showed the car on its side, with the front clamshell completely torn off, exposing the front wheels, suspension, and radiator.
The driver, a service technician employed by the mystery garage, was transported to Luton and Dunstable Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Lawrence Whittaker, owner of Lister, a renowned British racing car manufacturer, expressed his dismay at the incident on social media. “Heartbreaking F40 huge crash on the A5 today! Apparently it was in with a specialist for some work?” he tweeted.
The Ferrari F40, with its 3.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 471 horsepower, is a highly sought-after collector’s car. Only around 1,300 examples were ever produced, making this particular vehicle a rare and valuable asset.
Hertfordshire Police confirmed that they were called to the scene of the accident at 12:50 PM on Thursday.

Such a shame to see an iconic car being driven by an idiot with no respect for the car or its owner.
Saw the video from behind the car, easy to see the mechanic was trying to showboat!
Name and shame the company Bell sport and classic!

I used to MOT Ferrari’s for a local garage. at the most a few thousand miles in summer. virtually all had tyres that were well past their sell by date , rock hard and little if anything in the way of grip. BUT they were the original Cinturato’s. P6’s etc. Judging from the photos on the Internet he was not going fast. Just perhaps a cold road , rock hard old tyres and a turbo that cuts in like a rocket …he was checking for loss of performance..perhaps he fixed it….
