Banbridge mourns the passing of Uel McDowell, a local businessman who ran McDowell’s Garage on Bridge Street for over 60 years. Mr. McDowell passed away on 25 November, just a month after his 91st birthday.
Uel grew up in the building that now houses Friar Tucks, where his family ran a thriving business. His mother operated a delph shop, while his father managed the petrol pumps outside. Uel’s lifelong passion for cars led him to specialise in Volkswagens, making McDowell’s Garage a cherished local institution.
Mr. McDowell was known for his friendly demeanor and willingness to help anyone who came through his doors. He was often described as a “real wee gentleman” and will be deeply missed by his family and the entire Banbridge community.
