Dozens of cars have reportedly broken down after filling up with potentially contaminated fuel at a BP garage in Rayleigh, Essex.
A local fuel draining service provider stated a significant increase in callouts since Monday, suggesting a large number of affected vehicles.
BP has acknowledged the issue and identified a potentially contaminated fuel tank at the station. They are currently investigating the cause, which is suspected to be water contamination in the petrol.
“We are taking steps to assess the potential impact and determine the number of people who may be affected,” said a BP spokesperson. “Any customers with concerns should contact our careline for support.”
The garage reopened on Wednesday with the affected pump taken out of service.
Experts advise drivers who may have filled up with contaminated fuel to look for signs of engine trouble, such as fluctuating speeds or sputtering. If contamination is suspected, it is recommended to drain the tank and fuel lines and flush the system with fresh fuel, ideally with the help of a professional.
