Drivers face MOT and repair delays as Mercedes-Benz mechanics ballot for strikes

Unite union members at Hedin Mercedes-Benz dealerships in London and Kent consider industrial action over pay dispute

Drivers face MOT and repair delays as Mercedes-Benz mechanics ballot for strikes

Motorists could experience disruptions to car servicing, repairs, and MOTs as mechanics at four Hedin Mercedes-Benz dealerships in London and Kent are currently being balloted for strike action over pay.

Unite, the UK’s leading trade union, reports that workers are dissatisfied with Hedin Automotive’s refusal to offer a suitable pay rise.

Mechanics at the Brooklands, Bromley, Croydon, and Dartford dealerships are protesting the absence of any pay offer for 2025. Unite highlights that workers received only a 2% pay rise in 2024, significantly below the average RPI inflation rate of 3.6% for that period. The union further notes that the lack of a 2025 offer is particularly impactful given the RPI inflation rate jumped to 4.5% in April 2025, suggesting a further real-terms wage cut for employees.

Sharon Graham, General Secretary of Unite, affirmed the union’s commitment to defending its members’ jobs, pay, and conditions, stating that Hedin cannot expect its workers to endure continued real-terms wage reductions.

The ballot for strike action will conclude on 9th June. If strikes proceed, they are expected to affect Hedin customers requiring repairs, servicing, and MOTs across the four dealerships. Mercedes-Benz UK has declined to comment on the ongoing discussions between Hedin Automotive and Unite.

Lui D’Cunha, Unite’s regional officer, suggested that Mercedes-Benz would be displeased to see their brand drawn into a dispute over workers facing a real-terms pay cut, particularly in London, one of the world’s most expensive cities. He added that customers would also be inconvenienced by potential disruption to essential car services. D’Cunha indicated that industrial action could still be avoided if Hedin Automotive presents an acceptable pay offer. Hedin Automotive operates extensively across Europe, with over 330 dealerships. Strike action would impact all four of its UK locations.
