A car thief who stole an electric vehicle was apprehended by police after being stranded by a series of non-functional rapid chargers. The individual had stolen an unplugged Hyundai Ioniq 5 overnight but was unable to reach a planned meeting point with a boat due to insufficient battery range.
The thief encountered multiple charging stations that were either out of service, declined payment, or failed to authenticate his account. He was eventually found distressed at a non-operational 350kW charger, having completely depleted the vehicle’s battery and triggered its limp mode.
A police spokesperson commented on the incident, stating, “Although it gets a bad rap, people need to realise that our dodgy infrastructure is actually a massive deterrent to car thieves.”
The spokesperson added that the unreliability of the charging network may be discouraging a new generation of criminals, noting that stealing an electric city car lacks the appeal of traditional car theft.
