A Welsh garage owner has been fined after an employee was fatally crushed by a golf buggy. GNH Agri, based in Meithrinfa, admitted to a health and safety breach following the incident in November 2021.
The court heard that the employee, Warren Hayles, was working alone in a cramped workshop and had raised the golf buggy to an excessive height using a stacker truck. The buggy subsequently fell, causing fatal injuries.
The incident was exacerbated by a lack of supervision and inadequate risk assessments. The company failed to provide clear instructions on how to safely lift the buggies, leading to a preventable accident.
The judge highlighted the importance of workplace safety and the devastating consequences of negligence. The tragic loss of Mr. Hayles serves as a reminder for businesses to prioritise safety measures and ensure that their employees are adequately trained and supervised.

I would like to know the age of the employee, why he chose to lift the golf buggy in an unsafe manor, and why was the buggy lifted to the excessive height as stated? Unfortunately we will never know the answers to these questions. Why also did the employee need supervising? Yes the ultimate responsibilities lie with the business owner, but I strongly believe we should be responsible for our own actions. Sad he died in the process.
