Is it worth using Nitrogen in tyres?

We all understand the importance of tyre maintenance, and while compressed air has been the traditional go-to for inflation, the use of pure nitrogen offers several advantages .

Compressed air consists of approximately 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and trace amounts of water vapour and other gases. Nitrogen inflation, however, provides a more stable tyre pressure environment.

Incorrect tyre inflation leads to uneven wear, reduced tyre life, and decreased fuel efficiency. Nitrogen, permeating through tyre rubber at a rate 40% slower than regular air, maintains consistent tyre pressures over time. Helping improve tyre and vehicle efficiency.

Temperature fluctuations cause gases to expand and contract. Nitrogen reacts less to these changes, ensuring consistent tyre pressures, which is particularly beneficial for performance vehicles.

Moisture within tyres, introduced as humidity, causes greater pressure variations with temperature changes and contributes to rim corrosion. Nitrogen filling systems deliver dry nitrogen, minimising this concern. The nitrogen filling process involves multiple fill-and-purge cycles to remove oxygen and moisture.

Benefits of nitrogen inflation include:

  • More stable tyre pressures, reducing fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Reduced moisture, minimising wheel corrosion.
  • More consistent tyre pressures during temperature changes.

But nitrogen is not a substitute for regular tyre maintenance. Tyre pressures should be checked monthly, regardless of the inflation medium. A 10-degree ambient temperature change results in approximately 1 psi change in tyre pressure, regardless of whether air or nitrogen is used.
