Residents in Plymouth are voicing strong opposition to plans to convert a former car dealership into a Kwik Fit MOT garage.

The proposal, submitted by Rapleys property consultants, seeks to transform the vacant Ocean Mini showroom on Billacombe Road into a service centre. Over 30 objections have been lodged by neighbours citing noise, parking congestion, and safety worries.

Residents expressed concerns about environmental impact, potential danger for children playing near parked cars on streets without pavements, and the disruption caused by constant noise from the garage, spoiling the enjoyment of gardens.

Parking is a major concern, with fears of increased traffic, inconsiderate parking by customers, and a higher risk of accidents due to more vehicles entering and leaving the site.

Concerns also extend to the impact on elderly residents who rely on their gardens for relaxation. Residents worry that the noise from the garage will be unbearable and disrupt their use of outdoor spaces.

The proposed Kwik Fit would offer services like tyre fitting, repairs, and MOT testing. The application claims operating hours would be similar to the previous dealership and wouldn’t significantly alter noise levels for neighbours.

A decision on the application is expected on 2 August after a delay granted by Plymouth City Council.

  1. “The application claims operating hours would be similar to the previous dealership and wouldn’t significantly alter noise levels for neighbours.”

But was the previous dealership open Sundays and Bank holidays? Probably not.
