Michael Davies, a mechanic from Baschurch, Shropshire, has found a unique way to support his community. He offers car repairs at reduced costs to those struggling financially, often only charging for the parts themselves.
Driven by a desire to help others, particularly key workers reliant on their vehicles, Davies utilises his extensive experience gained during 13 years as an armoured vehicle mechanic in the British Army. He launched his initiative, North Shropshire Vehicle Services, in July 2022 through a Facebook page.
“I found a Facebook group called ‘Random acts of kindness – Shrewsbury’ and advertised there,” said Davies. “I was overwhelmed by the number of people needing help.”
While the exact number of individuals he’s assisted remains unclear, Davies estimates it could be in the hundreds. He juggles his good deeds with his day job as an assistant engineering manager, offering services ranging from brake pad replacements to full engine rebuilds.
“I’ve even helped people over social media, sometimes resolving issues without them needing to bring their car in,” he explained.
Davies’s services extend beyond basic repairs, as he also offers advice on car buying and spotting scams. He’s even helped those who’ve purchased vehicles with shoddy repairs or were sold in poor condition.
While council regulations have temporarily halted his operation from his home garage due to space limitations, Davies remains committed to finding a new permanent location to continue his valuable service. He welcomes any leads on affordable units within the Baschurch area.

This is the sort of thing which should be government-lead. The fact that a former serving member of the armed forces has to use their spare time to help people in need really shows how useless the government is at looking out for the ‘working man’

everyone wants everything done for nothing but if you can’t afford a car then don’t own one walk or get a pedal bike, I hear it all too often not got the money to fix the car as I just booked the family holiday for the 6 of us to the Maldives, but who would feed my children when I can’t pay my bills it’s just another example of people thanking and not giving anything back, its business not charity if you feel that strongly the register as a charity and take donations and not a living

I like the part where he said he “couldn’t believe how many people needed his help”
