A mechanic who has dedicated over 60 years to repairing vehicles in the Falkirk area is retiring at the age of 77. Jim Scott, from Carronshore, has been a familiar figure to generations of customers, having worked on their cars since his teenage years.

Leaving Graeme High School at 15, Jim began his career at Scott Autos and then Peter Smith’s Larbert School of Motoring. He later worked at Citroen dealer Stuart Aitken, where he contributed to the business winning the best small garage of the year award within the Citroen network for two consecutive years.

In the early 1980s, Jim established his own business, James Scott Motor Engineers, in Falkirk. Now, after decades of service, he is closing the workshop.

“I never thought I would make it to 77,” Jim remarked. “Never mind still be working at that age. I’ve had a lot of good customers over the years. You try and be loyal to them and hope they are loyal to you – and they have been.”

Jim credits his wife Julie as being an integral part of James Scott Motor Engineers. The couple, married for 66 years and parents to daughter Allyssa, decided that now was the appropriate time to retire.

Jim explained, “I’m sorry to leave, but there comes a time for everything to end. The modern electric cars are a bit beyond me and now we all have to think about emissions and other things. I’ve always enjoyed life and I never ever worked on a Sunday. There’s more to life than work.”

Jim and Julie will close their garage later this month before travelling to the USA to see their granddaughter in Washington DC. Jim joked about the possibility of examining some American classic cars during his visit.

  1. Well done Jim, you deserve the rest now. Let the next generation deal with the electric cars. I’m sure you’ll still do the odd bit of tinkering.
