Family-run Blossom Motor Company set to become Blossom Market, supporting independent retailers

Longstanding Ancoats MOT garage proposed for market conversion

A family-run MOT garage in Ancoats, which has served generations of customers, is proposed to be transformed into an independent market hall. Blossom Motor Company, a firm operating on Gun Street since 1948, is the subject of a planning application expected to be approved in the coming week (April 10th) for conversion into Blossom Market.

Blossom Motor Company has established a loyal customer base over its operational history, earning recognition for its service. The Ancoats area has undergone significant change during this time, evolving from an industrial hub to a more fashionable district with various food and beverage establishments. Property prices in the area have risen considerably over the past three decades.

According to a council planning report, the owners of Blossom Motor Company have chosen to cease garage operations and will retain ownership of the building. The report recommends that councillors approve the conversion. While acknowledging the loss of an independent vehicle repair service in the city centre, the report highlights the potential benefits of the proposed market.

The report states that the applicant’s long-term ownership will allow for careful selection of tenants, including offering lower rents to favour independent retailers. It suggests that Blossom Market presents a unique opportunity to support independent and creative businesses by providing them with a physical presence in Manchester city centre, further diversifying the retail offering in Ancoats and supporting the ongoing regeneration of the city.

Blossom Market is planned to include eight units for food outlets and shops. The redevelopment aims to create a “multi-unit arcade” atmosphere, with the intention of supporting smaller established businesses within the area, according to planning documents from Atelier MB architects.
