Gloucester councillor raises concerns over unauthorised vehicle repairs and dumping in city-owned spaces

Mobile mechanics using public car park as ‘workshop’

Concerns have been voiced regarding the use of a Gloucester city centre car park by a mobile mechanic and the presence of a burnt-out vehicle. Councillor Sajid Patel of Barton and Tredworth has urged Gloucester City Council to demonstrate action aligned with its corporate plan, citing numerous unresolved issues affecting residents.

During a recent council meeting, Councillor Patel highlighted that a city council-owned car park in Sinope Street is being used for vehicle repairs, effectively turning it into a mobile mechanic’s workshop. He also reported a burnt-out van that has remained in the car park behind The Treddy for six weeks, in addition to another burnt-out van he had requested removal for via nine emails.

Councillor Patel expressed residents’ frustration with recurring problems, including street drinking in council car parks, and challenged the council to move beyond “buzz words” to deliver tangible improvements to residents’ lives. He stated he had “lost count of the amount of emails” sent regarding these issues, including incomplete work in the car park that commenced a year ago.

Council leader Jeremy Hilton, however, criticised Councillor Patel for raising issues unrelated to the corporate plan discussions. He suggested that such concerns, including abandoned vehicles, should be submitted in writing to allow for proper investigation and action, rather than being brought up during council meetings without prior notice.

The ongoing situation in Gloucester raises questions about the appropriate boundaries for mobile mechanic operations and the enforcement of regulations in public spaces, particularly when these activities impact local residents and environmental conditions.

  1. This sounds like a legislative nightmare. How can you define the difference between a breakdown patrol and a mobile mechanic fixing or servicing your car. Be interested to see how this pans out.

    • I’m a mobile mechanic in Gloucester, servicing council contractors vehicles (Ringway), I’ve repaired and serviced their vehicles in many council car parks, lay-bys, Morrisons car park, and I’m talking about vehicles upto 18t…… but i guess it’s fine if it saves the state money, but not ok for anyone else…… hypocrisy at its best

  2. Got the same here in Swindon , the council do nothing about it , fine if you are a genuine mobile mechanic like Mike , but it’s all these “ on the side idiots “ that are most probably not even qualified mechanics that are earning a bit of cash on the side to boost their benefits !
