Recent figures from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) suggest that the MOT backlog in Northern Ireland may be easing.
January 2025 saw the highest number of vehicle tests conducted in the past decade, with over 101,000 tests carried out. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years, particularly during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when testing capacity was severely impacted.
The backlog has been a significant concern for motorists in recent years, largely attributed to issues with test centre lifting equipment and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on testing capacity.
The opening of two new testing centres in Mallusk and Hydebank later this year is expected to further alleviate the backlog and improve access to MOT testing services.
While the number of MOT test applications decreased in January 2025 compared to the previous year, available test slots are becoming more readily accessible.
These positive trends suggest that the situation regarding MOT testing in Northern Ireland is gradually improving.
