Isle of Wight councillor Matthew Price has called for increased support for small businesses, highlighting the significant challenges they face due to rising costs and economic uncertainty.
The motion, to be discussed at a council meeting, urges the council to lobby the government for financial assistance, particularly for the retail sector. The proposal suggests measures such as parking concessions to attract shoppers to local businesses.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” said Councillor Price. “We need to do everything we can to support them.”
Price, who owns ‘Prices MOT Centre’, has firsthand experience of the difficulties faced by small businesses. He emphasises the impact of rising costs, including increased national insurance contributions and minimum wage.
“We’ve been through a tough time,” he said. “It’s crucial that we support our local businesses to ensure their survival and the well-being of our community.”
By advocating for government support and local initiatives, the council aims to create a more favourable business environment on the Isle of Wight.
