National Tyres and Autocare, a Halfords company, has abruptly closed two of its branches, impacting motorists in Oxford and Wellingborough. The closures follow a “review of our estate” by the company.
The Oxford branch on Abingdon Road has ceased operations. A spokesperson for Halfords confirmed the closure, stating: “We are committed to supporting impacted colleagues and are offering alternative roles at nearby Halfords locations where possible.” The company also directed customers towards the Halfords Autocentre in Oxford Trade Centre, Harrow Road, and highlighted the availability of Halfords Mobile Expert services. This Oxford closure occurs amidst several other businesses shutting down on Abingdon Road last year, attributed to local traffic restrictions.
Similarly, the National Tyres and Autocare garage on Oxford Street in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, has also closed its doors. This closure also resulted from the company’s “review of our estate.”
Local officials have expressed regret over the closures. Oxford City Councillor deputy leader Anna Railton noted: “I’m sorry to see a business in Abingdon Road close. But I’m glad to see and support the two new nearby businesses and the emerging plans for a Chinese in the Berkshire.” She encouraged residents to support local independent businesses.
These closures represent a loss of a “go-to” car repair option for many drivers in both areas.
