Gareth Davies, owner of Scorpion Automotive Solutions in Pontypridd, Wales, is facing a potential £150,000 loss after Storm Bert caused significant flooding at his garage.
Floodwaters submerged several customer vehicles and damaged equipment, leaving the business in disarray.
Davies claims the damage could exceed £100,000 for vehicles alone, with additional costs for damaged equipment and a complex clean-up process. Located in a flood risk area, his insurance won’t cover the damages.
Adding to the difficulties, spilled oil from overturned containers mixed with the floodwater, requiring specialist advice for cleanup. Davies criticizes the lack of sufficient warnings from officials about the storm’s severity, suggesting a yellow warning underestimated the potential damage.
Local authorities and the Met Office have pledged to review the weather forecasts and warnings issued before the storm. Natural Resources Wales will also assess communication regarding flood risk to residents.
