A Norfolk mechanic has reported a significant increase in the number of vehicles requiring repairs due to pothole damage. The issue is echoed in a recent RAC survey, which found a record number of drivers are worried about the state of local roads.
Matthew Moore from Number One Motor Company in Norwich has seen a surge in repairs for broken coil springs and damaged wheels. “These issues are becoming so common that we’ve had to invest in new equipment to cope,” he said.
The RAC survey revealed that 56% of drivers consider road conditions a top motoring concern, with 73% reporting worsening road quality compared to last year. A quarter of drivers have suffered pothole-related vehicle damage in the past year, with punctures, wheel damage, and broken suspension springs being the most common issues.
Despite increased spending on road maintenance, local authorities face significant challenges due to limited resources and rising costs. The RAC has called for urgent clarification on future funding for local road maintenance.
While the government has announced additional funding for pothole repairs, concerns remain over the long-term sustainability of road maintenance and the need for preventative measures.
