A 2015 Range Rover Evoque, valued at £10,000, rolled down a family’s driveway after being left in “maintenance mode” by a Jaguar Land Rover garage near Leeds.
Carl Midgley had taken the vehicle to Vertu Land Rover in Guiseley for rear brake work. Upon returning home, the couple noticed the handbrake was not engaged. As Mrs. Midgley exited the vehicle, it began to roll down the driveway.
Mrs. Midgley, 63, attempted to escape as the 4,000lb vehicle moved, while Mr. Midgley tried to stop it from behind. The vehicle was eventually halted by a flower bed.
The incident resulted in damage to the Range Rover’s rear bumper, door, tyres, and wheels, requiring repairs costing several thousand pounds. The garage repaired the vehicle at no charge.
Mr. Midgley stated that the garage’s error could have caused serious injury, exacerbating his wife’s hip problem and affecting his back. He also expressed concern for the safety of his grandchildren and foster children.
Land Rover UK’s technical team inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the maintenance mode, used during garage work, had been accidentally left on.
Despite the repairs, Mr. Midgley claimed the garage had not offered adequate compensation.
A spokesperson for the dealership stated that the matter was resolved in 2023, with the customer accepting goodwill gestures, and that the customer continues to use their services.
