A surge in car thefts is being driven by increased profits from selling stolen vehicle parts, experts warn.
Criminal gangs are taking advantage of supply chain disruptions and higher part prices for SUVs to target vehicles and dismantle them at illegal “chop shops” as we’ve previously covered.
A joint operation by Tracker UK and police forces has uncovered nearly 40 such chop shops in the UK this year. These operations are becoming more common as part prices continue to rise.
“The growing popularity of SUVs has made them a prime target,” said Clive Wain, head of police liaison at Tracker. “Parts for SUVs have seen significant price increases, making them more lucrative for thieves.”
Brake discs and pads for SUVs have risen in price by 37% since 2020, compared to smaller increases for hatchbacks and saloons. Other components like pollen filters and wiper blades have also seen substantial price hikes.
High-end luxury cars remain a target for organised gangs using advanced techniques to steal them. These stolen vehicles are often dismantled and sold for parts domestically or internationally.
“These criminals are taking advantage of the supply chain issues and selling stolen parts for huge profits,” said Wain. “Chop shops are becoming more prevalent, operating in various locations, including industrial parks and even agricultural greenhouses.”
Despite efforts by police and vehicle security providers, the problem of car theft persists. With over 350 vehicles stolen daily in the UK, it’s crucial for car owners to take precautions to protect their vehicles.
