An 18-year-old mechanic from Northern Ireland has lost his driving license for three months after a high-speed chase with police.
Aaron Hughes, from Keady, was pulled over after officers observed him overtaking another vehicle at a significant speed on the Dungannon Road. When police pursued him, Hughes reportedly accelerated away, leading them on a chase that only ended when the police car reached its cruise control limit of 100mph.
During the hearing, the court was told that Hughes’ vehicle also had two defective tyres and improperly sized registration markings. He argued that he was driving two girls home who had missed their taxi, but Deputy District Judge Brian Archer emphasised the seriousness of the offence.
Hughes received a three-month driving disqualification, a £700 fine, and a £15 offender’s levy. The judge pointed out that Hughes’ actions endangered not only himself but also others on the road. The disqualification will likely impact his ability to complete a course at the Southern Regional College and could lead to increased insurance costs.
