While large-scale recalls often dominate headlines, independent garages should be aware that premium car manufacturers also issue safety recalls, impacting models ranging from Bentleys to Ferraris.

In 2024, 249 recalls affected 256 models from 41 brands in Europe, highlighting the increased complexity of modern vehicles. UK figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reveal 1,025 affected vehicles last year, compared to just 92 in 1994.

Luxury brands are not immune. Rolls-Royce, for example, recalled Cullinan and Ghost models due to potential fuel tank feed line issues. Lamborghini’s Urus SUV was recalled for fuel line connector concerns. Ferrari has 55 recall actions, including older models like the 328 and newer ones like the SF90 Stradale.

Premium manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo also feature prominently in recall lists. BMW, for instance, issued 48 recalls last year, primarily for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) leaks.

Independents should be aware that the DVSA oversees safety recalls in the UK, following regulations requiring manufacturers to report safety defects. These defects are defined as failures due to design or construction that pose a significant risk to drivers and occupants.

When a recall is issued, manufacturers contact affected vehicle owners, typically directing them to franchised dealerships for free repairs. However, independent garages may encounter these vehicles when owners seek alternative service options.

Technical service bulletins (TSBs), which address non-safety-related issues, are also relevant. These are often carried out during scheduled services, resolving performance or software problems.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are also subject to recalls. Kia, Hyundai, and Tesla have issued recalls for various issues, including driveshaft failures, airbag malfunctions, and steering problems.

Garages can check for vehicle recalls on the DVSA website or vehicle-recall.co.uk by entering the vehicle’s make, model, and year. This information is crucial for ensuring vehicle safety and providing informed service to customers.
