Tower Hamlets Council has reopened its MOT test centre on Silvocea Way, Poplar, after a five-year closure. The centre, which previously served only the council’s vehicle fleet, now offers MOT tests to residents and local businesses for cars and light commercial vehicles.
The council aims to provide an impartial MOT testing service, addressing concerns that some private garages may recommend unnecessary repairs for profit. As the council-run centre does not carry out repairs, residents can be assured that their vehicles will be assessed solely for roadworthiness.
Cllr Shafi Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and the Climate Emergency, stated that the centre offers “a straightforward MOT service” without the “risk of residents being handed a list of unnecessary and expensive repairs.” He emphasised the council’s commitment to providing peace of mind and ensuring vehicle safety without adding to residents’ financial pressures.
Due to limited availability, residents are encouraged to book MOT test slots in advance.
