The automotive industry is bracing for potential disruption to MOT testing following the expected introduction of new rules that could result in automatic failures for vehicles with unresolved safety recalls.
Data from ADS, the trade body for the automotive retail sector, suggests that over 50% of dealer databases contain outdated customer information, potentially impacting millions of vehicles with outstanding recalls.
With the previous government planning to integrate recall checks into the MOT testing process, and the current administration expected to implement this change, the industry is concerned about the potential for significant disruption.
“If this change happens suddenly, dealers could be overwhelmed by unforeseen demands for new parts and workshop time,” warned Jon Sheard, operations director at ADS.
While this change presents challenges, it also presents an opportunity for dealers to reconnect with lapsed customers, address outstanding recall issues, and encourage future service bookings.
The automotive industry is urging the government to provide clear guidance and adequate lead-time to ensure a smooth transition and minimise disruption to both motorists and the industry.
