A local garage in Urchfont, Wiltshire, has been saved from demolition after a local council rejected a planning application for five new houses on the site.
The garage, Urchfont Vehicles, has been a part of the community for over two centuries. Dozens of residents and supporters attended a council meeting to voice their opposition to the development, highlighting the potential loss of jobs and essential local services.
Councillor Philip Whitehead, a vocal opponent of the proposal, emphasised the historical significance of the site and the importance of preserving local businesses. He argued that the development would have a negative impact on the community and that there were alternative locations for housing.
Tracy Lloyd, the leaseholder of Urchfont Vehicles, expressed her relief at the decision, acknowledging the overwhelming support from the community. She emphasised the challenges of relocating the business and the potential impact on her long-serving staff.
While the decision is a victory for the local community, the threat of an appeal remains. The community will continue to monitor the situation and advocate for the preservation of Urchfont Vehicles.
